ESR-FGU Project: (Start November/December 2013)

Regulation of intracellular ion homeostasis in Candida interacting with the host

The ESR will study the changes in cytosolic pH and cation concentrations upon interactions with host; will construct new mutant strains in order to identify and characterize transporters involved in proton and/or alkali-metal-cation homeostases as potential targets for development of respective assays supporting drug discovery. The project aims to characterize transport systems and mechanisms underlying the maintenance of membrane potential, intracellular cation and pH homeostases in Candida spp.

Main Research Interests

Our research interests focus on study of 1) cell transport systems and their mechanisms on molecular level with the employment of yeast to characterize transport systems in mammalian and plant cells; 2) molecular basis of the high osmotolerance in non-conventional yeasts – identification of genes responsible for extremely high osmotolerance, their functional expression in industrial S. cerevisiae strains; 3) development of tools for genetic engineering of non-conventional yeasts; and 4) role of transporters in yeast cell physiology, virulence and pathogenicity with a special focus on transporters involved in pH, membrane potential and cation homeostases, multidrug resistence and nutrient acquisition.
